GEOLOGIC MAPPING OF NW 1/2 OF CHESTNUT HILL, DYERSBURG, NW 1/2 OF RUSSELLVILLE, WILDER, DRILLING IN LANE, TN 7.5' QUADRANGLES, COMPILATION OF 3 DERIVATIVE MAPS, AND CONVERSION OF 2 GEOLOGIC MAPS PROJECT PERIOD: 07/01/2022 - 06/30/2023GEOLOGY OF THE LEAPWOOD 7.5-MINUTE QUADRANGLE, MCNAIRY COUNTY, TENNESSEEAN EDMAP PROPOSAL BY WILLIAM T. JACKSON, JR.PLAIN LANGUAGE DESCRIPTIONTHE LEAPWOOD 7.5-MINUTE QUADRANGLE, IN WESTERN TENNESSEE, CONTAINS SEDIMENTARY ROCKS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTANDING EASTERN NORTH AMERICA DURING THE CRETACEOUS PERIOD (~ 80 TO 65 MILLION YEARS AGO). CONDUCTING GEOLOGIC MAPPING AND HEAVY MINERAL ANALYSIS OF ROCKS WITHIN THE LEAPWOOD QUADRANGLE WILL PROVIDE VALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF SAND UNITS THAT CAN BENEFIT THE SAND AND GRAVEL INDUSTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY ASSESSMENTS IN WESTERN TENNESSEE. A COLLABORATIVE TEAM FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AT MARTIN WILL CONDUCT THIS WORK. TO COMPLETE THIS WORK GEOLOGIC MAPPING AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SOFTWARE (GIS) WILL BE COUPLED WITH HEAVY MINERAL ANALYSIS. RESULTS FROM THIS WORK WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC THROUGH DISTRIBUTION OF A GEOLOGIC MAP, CROSS SECTION, AND WRITTEN REPORT BY THE U.S. GEOLOGIC SURVEY, THE TENNESSEE GEOLOGIC SURVEY, AND THE COON CREEK SCIENCE CENTER (LOCATED WITHIN THE LEAPWOOD QUADRANGLE).ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMEDDEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT & CONSERVATION TENNESSE WILL CONDUCT BEDROCK GEOLOGIC MAPPING, AS WELL AS SURFICIAL MAPPING OF UNCONSOLIDATED QUATERNARY DEPOSITS THROUGHOUT THE LEAPWOOD QUADRANGLE IN WESTERN TENNESSEE. SUBSURFACE 3D PROJECTIONS OF STRATIGRAPHIC UNITS IN THE LEAPWOOD QUADRANGLE WILL BE PERFORMED FROM GEOLOGIC MAPPING DATA. HEAVY MINERAL ANALYSIS OF SAND UNITS THROUGHOUT THE QUADRANGLE WILL BE CONDUCTED ON SAMPLES COLLECTED DURING GEOLOGIC MAPPING.DELIVERABLES AND INTENDED OUTCOMESTHIS WORK WILL RESULT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A GEOLOGIC MAP, STRATIGRAPHIC COLUMN, CROSS SECTION, AND WRITTEN REPORT FOR THE LEAPWOOD QUADRANGLE IN WESTERN TENNESSEE.
