About this award
The University of Texas at Austin was awarded a $1,284,536 cooperative agreement by the U.S. Geological Survey under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810). The award funds a 14-month project from September 2023 to November 2024 to produce detailed 1:24,000 scale geologic maps and digital map databases for 9 quadrangles in the Texas Coastal Plain, Central/Southwest Texas, and West Texas regions. Other key deliverables include 2 small-scale compilation maps, isothermal surface maps for South Texas to support geothermal resource assessment, updates to the National Geologic Map Database, and an inventory of geoheritage sites in Texas. This work will provide federal and state agencies, landowners, and the public with improved geologic data and models to support infrastructure planning, natural resource management, and economic development activities across Texas.
Description
Project abstractproject title: texas statemap FY2023PROJECT period: 09 01 2023- 08 31 2024THE texas statemap program is a cooperative geologic mapping effort supported equally by federal and state funds. Activities that will be supported by the FY2023 award will include detailed geologic mapping at a scale of 1:24,000 in four project areas that include the upper and middle texas coastal plain, central and southwestern texas, and west texas. This effort will produce nine new geologic quadrangle maps and accompanying geologic map databases. Other major activities supported by the FY2023 award that are directly relevant to the U.S. Geoframework initiative (category 2 projects) include (1) two small-scale compilation maps and geodatabases (one in the SAN antonio BAY region of the coastal plain and one in the black GAP area of west texas) (2) isothermal surface maps of the south texas region (21 counties) to support a multiyear effort to construct a statewide geothermal resources map and geodatabase (3) updates to the national geologic map database (ngmdb) to include bureau of economic geology (bureau) publications that are currently missing from the ngmdb and adding to the 3D data inventory of maps and cross sections in bureau publications that would aid the creation of 3D geologic models and (4) developing an inventory of geoheritage sites in texas and providing geospatial data and site attributes. The intended beneficiaries of the geologic mapping and U.S. Geoframework initiative tasks include (1) federal and state governmental agencies engaged in the creation of accurate and seamless geologic maps and three-dimensional geologic models for the nation, (2) state and regional governmental agencies responsible for the management or regulation of land use, mineral resources, and groundwater in texas, and (3) landowners interested in a variety of geologic subjects including susceptibility to geologic hazards, industrial and critical mineral resources, geothermal resources, groundwater, oil and gas resources, coastal erosion and subsidence, wetlands, environmental stewardship, economic development, and geologic heritage sites.
