Description
New geologic mapping in washington stateproject period: 07 01 2024 through 06 30 2024PURPOSETHE recipient will complete detailed surficial and bedrock geologic mapping of three 7.5-minute quadrangles in three geographic areas and interim geologic mapping of two 7.5-minute quadrangles in one other area. Two ofthe areas will also benefit from detailed geophysical studies. The mapping efforts will have considerableimpact on the public through the characterization of geologic hazards and the responsible use of naturalresources. The new geologic mapping will also provide much-needed information to test models of howstrain from an oblique subduction zone deforms the upper crust and is transferred between the forearc andbackarc.activitiesfor new detailed geologic mapping in the tanwax lake, enumclaw, and manastash creek quadrangles wewill conduct geologic mapping and geophysical (gravity) data acquisition starting on july 1, 2024. Fieldwork will conclude by early november. Data processing, map creation, sample analysis, and writing willbegin after field work and continue through april, 2025. Editing, peer review, map and pamphlet revision, and further analysis will continue through june, 2025. Final map layout, review, and publication will occurthrough the summer and fall of 2025 and final publication is scheduled for december, 2025.for the interim geologic mapping of the puyallup and tacoma north quadrangles, the recipient will compileexisting unpublished mapping into a gems schema in summer and fall of 2024. There will be no fieldworkfor this effort. The recipient will continue to work with the puyallup tribe and USGS to secure land-access agreementsfor fieldwork in subsequent years.deliverables and outcomesnew geologic mappingthe recipient will publish detailed surficial and bedrock geologic maps at 1:24,000 scale, technical reports, and GIS databases prior to delivery to the program officer by june 30, 2026. This will include the tanwax lake, manastash creek, and enumclaw 7.5-minute quadrangles.interim geologic mappingthe recipient will provide an interim compilation geologic map of the puyallup and tacoma north quadrangles AT1:24,000 scale to the program officer by june 30, 2026.gems geodatabasesthe recipient will develop gems level 3 geodatabases for each of the geologic maps described above and publish them with complete fgdc metadata as stand-alone products. These will be delivered to the programofficer by june 30, 2026.intended beneficiariesthe selection of these areas for mapping and study is based on the recommendation of a broad-based panelof stakeholders, including representatives from counties and planners, aggregate and mining industries, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, research geologists and hydrogeologists at theusgs, the U.S. Bureau of reclamation, other state agencies (department of transportation, departmentof natural resources), consultants and engineers, and others. As a result, projects often have multiplebeneficiaries. In general the work is used by a wide variety of geoscientists, policy makers, planners, andothers to: 1) identify and characterize geologic hazards 2) build understanding of water and earth resourcesto improve growth management act planning 3) provide mapping in areas of emerging societal need, and 4) understand geologic processes.
