Description
The SAN diego natural history museum has partnered with conservacin DE fauna DEL noroeste, the nature conservancy, US fish and wildlife service, US geological survey, the california department of fish and wildlife, riverside county parks, and a private landowner, to recover the baja california lineage of the federally threatened california red-legged frog (rana draytonii) in extirpated portions of its historical range. The partners have planned and implemented reintroductions from baja california, mexico, to two core areas identified by the recovery plan (santa rosa plateau and SAN luis REY in recovery unit #8) in southern california from 2020-2022. This proposal builds upon ongoing efforts to: 1) expand occupancy at reintroduction sites through additional reintroductions 2) promote breeding and expansion of source populations in baja california through habitat management 3) evaluate new reintroduction sites in the historical range of the baja california lineage 4) continue to translocate r. Draytonii to sites in both the U.S. And mexico and, 5) provide comprehensive monitoring of reintroduced and source populations for the duration of this 3-year project. This project supports a cooperative partnership between two non-governmental U.S. Institutions, third-party governmental agencies, and a mexican conservation organization with the aim to increase the resiliency of r. Draytonii by RE-establishing populations in extirpated parts of the historical range. As the hardest HIT region in the decline of r. Draytonii, southern california now has multiple restoration actions underway to revive the species, but maintaining momentum by securing grant funding is key to ensuring success.
