Description

Working with project partners, we will evaluate the feasibility of modifying, replacing, or creating new crossing structures to facilitate the safe passage of pacific marten (martes caurina humboldtensis, hereafter coastal marten) across U.S. Highway 101, between florence and coos BAY, oregon. Existing presence absence and traffic-related data will be used to identify locations where coastal marten have a high likelihood of crossing U.S. Highway 101 and where potential mitigation is possible. These data will also be used to select the locations where remote camera monitoring and road kill surveys will take place over a one-year period. Combining all data, we will further evaluate existing potential road crossings in the area for suitability as passage structures for coastal marten and other wildlife, taking into consideration engineering constraints. Using feedback gathered from project partners, we will develop a final report including conceptual designs of the preferred alternative for up to ten crossing locations, including a priority ranking among the feasibility sites.
