Description
National wetlands inventory (NWI) is a key dataset for wetland ecosystems conservation acrossthe U.S. However, this dataset is not contemporary for much of the U.S. And needs to be updatedto reflect the changes of wetlands. This project makes use of contemporary land cover products(nlcd and ccap), time series satellite data (landsat and sentinel), and advanced computationmethods (google earth engine and high performance computer) to support a more efficient andcost-effective NWI production workflow. More specifically, this project aims to identify thehotspots of wetland changes at census tract and watershed levels, targeting the regions with mostwetland loss and open water gain. The census tracts and watersheds identified are potentially theregions that need to be updated the most. The statistics of wetland loss to impervious surface ofeach NWI polygon will also be calculated, in an effort to identify the wetland polygons with mostwetland loss. The new open water gain will also be identified and converted into polygons, whichwill aid in the creation of standard compliant new NWI data. The products, metadata, and projectreport derived through this study will be delivered to fish and wildlife service (FWS).
