Description
Marys river watershed council (mrwc) will continue to assist in achieving viable populations of fenders blue butterfly (icaricia icarioides fenderi) and taylors checkerspot butterfly (euphydryas editha taylori) in the corvallis, oregon recovery zone. Our goal is to support and expand populations of host and nectar plant species and to reduce habitat isolation and fragmentation by linking conservation lands through voluntary private landowner conservation. Mrwc began working on prairie recovery more extensively in the wren area in 2011. Since that time, kincaid s lupine cover in wren has been expanded to over 40 above the estimated 2,391M surveyed between 2006 and 2011 in the benton county habitat conservation plan.1 nectar has increased over 12 years, with 72,406 total bulbs, plugs, and bare roots having been planted. Notwithstanding this success, invasive control is an ongoing endeavor on prairie sites, and encroachment from weeds and the continued need for expanding suitable habitat necessitates continuing and expanded work. Mrwc proposes in the scope of this project to shore up existing kincaids lupine and nectar planting sites through weed control and expanded planting. In addition, we intend to work with the USFWS partners program to increase connectivity on four sites, removing conifer and dense english hawthorn stand barriers, working on properties with landowners already engaged in recovery program efforts. Following on the success of improving habitats and connectivity on existing restoration sites, mrwc will look for opportunities to expand the number of landowners and sites engaged in the wren nectar network. Safe harbor agreements will be pursued and developed for landowners, and mrwc will also provide landowner liaison for USFWS partners agreement development, prairie survey and research projects.
