About this award
The Department of Energy awarded the University of Tennessee a $3.2 million cooperative agreement from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2027 under the Nuclear Energy Research, Development and Demonstration program (CFDA #81.121). The award will support research into innovative nuclear energy programs including the design and testing of new operator interfaces incorporating human factors for reliable hybrid plant operations. It will also fund the analysis of appropriate response procedures for anticipated and design-basis accidents in coupled nuclear and non-nuclear energy systems. Subawards totaling $800k were provided to the University of Idaho and the University of Texas at San Antonio to support research into human cognition and supervision of hybrid plants, and the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to energy dispatch and cybersecurity in nuclear power. An additional $400k subaward to the University of New Mexico will fund the development and testing of smart valve flow controllers to control thermal extraction and optimize flexible plant operation between nuclear and other industrial processes. Relevant experimental data and models developed will inform integrated system testing and support component health monitoring and reliability.
