Description

The agreement provides funding to california department of public health (cdph). Specifically, the recipient will create a robust indoor air sensor network across oakland unified school district (ousd) sites, coupled with indoor air quality and climate change curricula for ousd high school stem classes and civic engagement activities that uplift underserved students and their families. This project aligns with oakland's environmental justice element, drafted for year 2045, by addressing barriers to environmental workforce development, making knowledge and resources addressing local environmental issues accessible to the oakland community, and enhancing local air monitoring to increase data sources across two california air resources board AB 617 priority communities. The proposed activities aim to achieve the following: 1) projected increase in protection against and awareness of environmental hazards across ousd sites and affiliated families, including local emissions, wildfire smoke, and extreme heat. 2) continued guidance and technical assistance made available to schools regarding leveraging state and federal funds to make cost-effective improvements to ventilation and air filtration systems. 3) effective workforce development, hands-on training, and mentorship program from state university public health students, all of which target underserved ousd students. All activities will be guided by a community steering committee formed for this purpose, promoting environmental justice through collaboration and shared decision-making power amongst our project partners, community members, and educators.activities:the activities include: task 1: form and foster a diverse community steering committee task 1A: establish and sustain the community steering committee will establish and support a CSC that will advise and provide guidance to cdph and SF on all of the project's primary tasks. SF will collect signed agreements with each participant to ensure members understand their role and expectations over the course of the project. The CSC will be made up of at least eight member partners that have either committed to join the CSC or recruited based on historic interest in the oakland community. Task 1B: facilitate CSC project guidance and conduct meetings the CSC will meet three times each project year (for a total of nine meetings). The SF community engagement coordinator will facilitate meetings and the cdph PI and SF project manager will attend each meeting. Csueb faculty partners will also advise/consult as needed. The final meeting in both years two and three will include opportunities for students that participated in the IAQ toolkit lessons to share their research and reflections with local experts and community members affected by poor AQ. Agenda, minutes, and presentations will be collected at each meeting, and a compilation of student research abstracts from final year two and three meetings will be produced and featured on SF's scholair website (WWW.scholairproject.ORG). SF will support CSC members in communicating project outcomes and (other messages) with their constituents. Task 1C: establish open access, layperson visualizations of IAQ data cdph, SF, and csueb faculty will work closely with the CSC and the IAQ sensor vendor to link data collected by the IAQ monitoring network (see task 2) to one or more existing publicly-available AQ data networks (e.g., airnow, carb interactive maps, etc.) CSC guidance will drive the data sites, tools, and presentation so that the resulting visualizations are both accessible and useful to oakland communities. Task 2: establish the ousd indoor air quality monitoring network task 2A: recruit and train osud student interns for IAQ sensor installation SF will work with HG to recruit ousd students into their workforce program. HG will place internship marketing MA
