Description

Awards issued prior to january 20, 2025, were funded under previous administrations and may not reflect the priorities and policies of the current administration.** food waste is a costly problem schools already face, and the solutions offered by waste management companies DON't meet the environmental standards required by the state of vermont or most school and community stakeholders. Uvscp turns a problem into a solution: lowering costs and reducing landfilling while supporting soil health and water quality - all through the adoption of on-site composting systems that double as outdoor classrooms. The mission of the upper valley super compost project is to reconstruct school waste streams from ones that create pollution and export nutrients to ones that build resilience and recycle locally, engaging schools and students as leaders in real-world problem-solving for change.?uvscp composting systems are youth centered, exemplifying a broader approach to educating for climate resilience: seeding in youth the strength to take on challenge and change. Our approach promotes overlapping support and knowledge-sharing and outdoor classrooms connected to the farms and communities around them. The uvscp program is designed to catalyze and dissolve, and to be replicated in other regions using our program toolkit.even with the best food waste reduction and diversion practices, schools are net waste generators. With our help, they won't waste the opportunity to generate leadership or resilience.
