About this award

This federal contract award is a $247,394 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to The Johns Hopkins University to continue research on the geology and composition of lunar impact basins. The original grant was held by the Lunar and Planetary Institute, but is being transferred to the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) due to a change in the principal investigator's employment. The scope, tasks, and scientific objectives of the research will remain the same, utilizing both the originally proposed and newer, higher resolution datasets. The award does not have a set-aside designation. The grant is anticipated to require one or two no-cost extensions before the updated completion date of March 10, 2026 due to the transition period. The Johns Hopkins University is a large, private research university with extensive experience conducting scientific research and providing specialized services to federal agencies across public health, defense, and space domains.

Description

We are requesting a transfer of the grant entitled geological and compositional studies of ejecta and melt of lunar impact basins from the lunar and planetary institute to the applied physics laboratory, where the PI has recently moved. We do not anticipate a need for a change in the scope, proposed tasks, or scientific objectives of the original proposal. Data used for the completion of the originally proposed objectives will include all originally proposed datasets and methodology as well as newer, higher resolution datasets from LRO, kaguya (e.g., mineral maps), and arecibo. The work plan has been updated here to reflect the new personnel and time remaining in the proposal period. As a result of the unavoidable GAP in time between DR. Spudis illness and passing and the initiation of the PI transfer as well as the transition of the new PI (h. Meyer) to APL, we anticipate requesting at least one no-cost extension (more likely two) before the end of the period of performance.
