About this award
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) awarded a firm fixed price delivery order to Leidos Security Detection & Automation, Inc., a subsidiary of Leidos Holdings, Inc., to purchase new in-feed tunnels for explosive detection systems (EDS) used in airports. The order is valued at $2,240,999.33 and tasks the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) with removing the existing meter-wide tunnels (MWT) and replacing them with standard tunnels. The MWT design, which uses parallel conveyor belts with ball bearings, was causing increased bag jams due to the inertia of suddenly stopping the conveyor. This delivery order is not associated with a set-aside program. Leidos Security Detection & Automation is a manufacturer of security screening and detection equipment that supplies the TSA and other federal agencies with a range of technologies and support services. The parent company, L3Harris Technologies, Inc., is a defense contractor that also provides communications, avionics, and other solutions to government customers.
Description
The TSA has a number of explosive detection systems (EDS) operating in the field utilizing meter wide tunnels (MWT) for the in-feed to the machine. The mwts consists of a specialized design of independently operated parallel conveyors (e.g., like tank tracks) with ball bearing surfaces to improve the checked baggage hygiene prior to entering the scanner section of the EDS, to thereby reduce bag jams. However, the sudden stopping of the conveyor belts, along with the ball bearings, causes the inertia of the bag to continue spinning, thereby creating an increase of bag jams. This order is to purchase new in-feed tunnels that do not have the MWT feature, and tasks the OEM with the removal of the existing mwts and to replace them with standard tunnels.
