Description
To identify the key, predictable demands forced upon the hospital sector by a bioterrorist event, including those relating to mass treatment (e.g., ability to establish additional staffed hospital beds; identify source of anticipated material needs, such as ventilators and antibiotics; and mobilize and inform hospital staff), and to limit the risk to patients and staff from contagious agents through adequate infection control measures (including effective emergency department triage and the possible institution of isolation or quarantine). By providing an opportunity to experience the after effects of a notional bioterrorist event, the exercise will focus key hospital decision-makers' attentions on some essential planning needs within their institutions, and aims to generate support for ongoing bioterrorism preparedness coordination between all medical care facilities in the city/region and for continued collaboration with city and state planners.
