About this award
This federal contract award to Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is for a project titled "Modeling Three-Dimensional Transient Flame Growth to Support the SAFFIRE Microgravity Experiments." The objectives are to support large-scale microgravity combustion experiments of the SAFFIRE program and provide a robust model for simulating existing and future microgravity experiments. The $500,000 cooperative agreement with NASA Glenn Research Center involves enhancing the modeling capabilities, validating the model against space combustion data, and performing computations corresponding to SAFFIRE experiment configurations and spacecraft fire scenarios. This ongoing project builds upon previously completed tasks to improve fire safety in space. The contract does not have a set-aside designation.
Description
Modeling three-dimensional transient flame growth to support the saffire microgravity experiments as a collaborative effort with NASA glenn research center to improve fire safety in space, the objectives of this ongoing project are to support the large-scale microgravity combustion experiments of saffire, and to provide a robust, reliable model that serves as the basis for simulating existing and future microgravity experiments. Previously completed project tasks include: 1) model enhancements such as an automatic adaptive mesh and a two-step solid pyrolysis reaction to accommodate large-scale simulations, 2) model validation against newly available space combustion experimental data (bass), and 3) preliminary predictions of the saffire-i test. Development of this model is ongoing. New tasks in the current proposal include: 1) analyzing data from the saffire tests, 2) performing large scale computations corresponding to saffire experiment configurations, 3) spacecraft fire scenarios, and 4) improving the realism of the numerical model by introducing detailed solid pyrolysis reactions.
