About this award
The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) was awarded a $1.83M cooperative agreement by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center with a completion date of December 31, 2026. The contract funds the Eclipse Ambassadors program, a three-year initiative led by ASP in partnership with the SETI Institute and Space Science Institute to prepare underserved communities located outside the paths of totality for the 2023 and 2024 solar eclipses. The program will recruit and train approximately 1,000 Eclipse Ambassadors across 500 communities nationwide, with the goal of providing direct public engagement experiences to more than 10,000 people. Additional partners including libraries, the National Park Service, the Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP), the American Astronomical Society, and the Solar System Ambassadors will contribute expertise and resources. No set-aside designation applies to this award.
The project addresses a gap in eclipse preparation efforts by focusing on communities that will experience only partial eclipse phases rather than totality. Through advance engagement and training in astronomy and safety, participating communities will receive in-depth learning experiences designed to build excitement and increase understanding of the Earth-Moon-Sun relationship. Project evaluation will measure the success of training and supporting Eclipse Ambassadors in delivering quality public engagement to diverse audiences, as well as the establishment of sustainable partnerships between astronomy educators, colleges, community organizations such as libraries, and underserved communities. The initiative supports NASA's broader objectives of increasing science literacy and broadening participation in astronomy and space science.
