About this program
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administers the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program Multi-State and National Earthquake Assistance (MSNEA) grant program (CFDA 97.147), with the next application due date of August 14, 2026. FEMA awards competitive grants to nonprofit organizations and institutions of higher education to develop and implement regional (multi-state) and national earthquake risk mitigation activities. The program does not fund single-state efforts; all activities must serve multi-state or national scope and align with the NEHRP vision, mission, and strategic goals established by the coordinating agencies: FEMA, National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Geological Survey.
Funded activities include support for Eastern and Western assistance regions, seismic community professional development, business sector outreach, and the annual ShakeOut earthquake preparedness drills for individuals and communities. The program operates as a competitive grant mechanism reviewed by a national panel of FEMA NEHRP subject matter experts who evaluate applicant experience, work plans, deliverable schedules, anticipated outcomes, and proposed budgets.
Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, private and public higher education institutions, and other organizational categories. The source does not provide recent award portfolio data, dollar volumes, typical award magnitudes, or recent grant awards funded under this program, limiting visibility into the program's funding concentration, economics envelope, or historical award cadence.
