About this program

The Federal Emergency Management Agency operates the National Fire Academy Training Assistance program (CFDA 97.018) to reimburse student travel and lodging for fire service, emergency medical services, and emergency management personnel attending National Fire Academy courses at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland, with the most recent grant award issued in July 2023.

The program funds round-trip transportation (airline, train, bus, or personal vehicle mileage) to the training center, local airport-to-campus transportation, and free lodging for attendees. Reimbursement covers up to 75 percent of attendance expenses. In FY 2025, the program reimbursed 3,424 students for $1,091,002 in stipends, demonstrating sustained operational activity serving a large annual cohort.

Grant activity has been sparse in the formal award portfolio: two awards total spanning from 2017 to 2023, split evenly between Formula Grants and Project Grants. The most recent formal award dates to July 2023 (over three years ago), though FY 2025 operational data confirms the program remains active and distributing funds at scale. Combined federal dollars obligated across the two recorded awards total $121 thousand, though this figure does not reflect the $1.1 million in FY 2025 stipend disbursements reported in the program description—suggesting the portfolio block captures only a subset of formal award transactions or that most activity flows through operational reimbursement channels rather than discrete grant awards.

Funding concentrates under the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which obligated all recorded federal dollars. Reimbursement is processed immediately upon agreement package completion, with electronic payment issued to the beneficiary's bank account. Application deadlines vary by headquarters or regional location and should be confirmed directly with the appropriate office. The program excludes preapplication coordination and environmental review requirements.

Prospective applicants should note the sparse formal-award history in the portfolio block and contact the National Fire Academy directly to clarify application procedures and current solicitation status, as no recent grant opportunity notices appear in the public record.
