About this program
The Corporation for National and Community Service funded place-based multifaceted solutions to community challenges using AmeriCorps members across State and National, VISTA, and NCCC programs, with the most recent grant award on October 1, 2015 (CFDA 94.025).
Program activity has ceased. The portfolio contains ten Project Grants awarded in 2015 with no subsequent grant activity in the eleven years since. The most recent grant opportunity closed on January 14, 2015. No current grant opportunities are posted.
The program funded two-year or shorter initiatives to address locally identified community challenges by deploying AmeriCorps resources at scale. Representative awards illustrate the scope: the Pawtucket School Department (Rhode Island) deployed 32 AmeriCorps members to connect 1,050 graduating high school seniors to five post-secondary career pathways including college, military service, employment, apprenticeships, and AmeriCorps itself; the Osage Nation (Oklahoma) mobilized 15 AmeriCorps members to develop the Wah Zha Zhe Eco Park and Bird Creek Farms to educate community members about food systems. Eligible applicants were tribal and local governments, counties, cities, towns, school districts, and state service commissions.
All ten awards were Project Grants. The Corporation for National and Community Service funded 7 awards ($5 million federal dollars obligated), and the Corporation for National and Community Service Office of Grants Management funded 3 awards ($2 million federal dollars obligated). Combined federal dollars obligated totaled $7 million across ten awards; combined total obligated (federal plus non-federal share) reached $14.7 million, indicating recipients contributed approximately $7.7 million in matching funds. Award magnitudes ranged from $351 thousand to $6.5 million, with a median around $900 thousand.
Grant records must be maintained for three years from final FFR submission. All individuals receiving salary, living allowance, stipend, or similar compensation must clear a National Service Criminal History Check, with records maintained in grant files.
Objective and description
- Objective
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is seeking to partner with localities to use national service as the transformative catalyst to address a pressing problem. Tribal and local leaders (a mayor or other chief executive) will identify a high priority local challenge which AmeriCorps members from all three streams of service-AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps NCCC, and AmeriCorps VISTA-can holistically address in a relatively short period of time (no more than two years). The solution must be place-based and ambitious in order to succeed in the competition. The solution may be a new initiative, or it may use national service to scale up an existing successful effort.
