About this program
The Corporation for National and Community Service funds disaster response support through the AmeriCorps Disaster Response Cooperative Agreement (CFDA 94.020), a rolling-application program that reimburses eligible national service organizations for actual expenses incurred when deploying trained volunteer teams to communities affected by disasters and emergencies.
The program operates on a reimbursement model: organizations receive awards only when deployed and only for documented disaster-related costs, meaning no funds flow if the organization is not activated. Three-year agreements are contingent on base grant funding; termination of a base grant terminates the associated cooperative agreement. The program emphasizes rapid deployment flexibility, allowing participating organizations to activate individually or in coordination with peers to address evolving community needs in impacted areas.
Eligible applicants include AmeriCorps subgrantees with capacity to deploy national service participants to disaster zones (AmeriCorps State programs, Senior Corps programs, youth corps, and local volunteer and service organizations), State Service Commissions that coordinate networks of national service programs, and AmeriCorps National Direct Grantees. National Direct Grantees deploy AmeriCorps members already assigned to their programs; State Service Commissions can mobilize other national service participants through their networks.
The program operates under rolling application with no formal appeals process. Award criteria are outlined in the cooperative agreement application. Participants bring diverse operational strengths—environmental conservation capacity, volunteer coordination, rapid development capability—to deliver coordinated support when activated. Application materials, deadlines, and current funding opportunities are available through the AmeriCorps website at americorps.gov/partner/funding-opportunities. The Notice of Funding Opportunities contains specific timeline and submission requirements for prospective applicants.
