About this program
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) within the National Institutes of Health funds SBIR and STTR grants for small businesses developing innovative, commercially viable products and technologies in environmental health science, under Assistance Listing 93.ESS. The source provides no recent grant award dates or open opportunities, limiting visibility into current program activity.
NIEHS SBIR-STTR funding supports research and technology development across six core areas: exposure assessment tools including sensors and computational methods; tools for evaluating environmental health and safety of engineered nanomaterials; bio-monitoring technologies and biological response markers; assays and model systems for compound toxicity screening; intervention technologies to prevent or reduce environmental stressor exposure; and educational materials on environmental health science. The program aims to translate environmental health research into commercially viable solutions and communication strategies that improve public health.
The program operates under standard NIH small business requirements. SBIR applicants must be domestic, for-profit, independently owned small businesses with no more than 500 employees, not dominant in their field. The principal investigator must be primarily employed (more than one-half time) by the applicant small business at award and during project conduct. STTR applicants must meet the same small business criteria but structure projects as formal partnerships with research institutions, with the small business performing at least 40 percent of project work and the research institution performing at least 30 percent. Both SBIR and STTR Phase I and Phase II research must be performed in the U.S. and its possessions. Applications undergo scientific and technical evaluation through an initial review group and the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council, with final selection aligned to NIH Unified Funding Strategies and NIEHS strategic priorities. Financial records must be retained for three years from the date of the final financial status report.
The source does not report recent award data, portfolio composition by assistance type, funding volumes, typical award magnitudes, representative recent awards, or currently open grant opportunities.

- Description
NIEHS SBIR/STTR grants help small businesses develop innovative and commercially viable products or technologies to translate and communicate environmental health research to improve public health. The SBIR/STTR program uses a combination of research, technology transfer, and communication strategies to aid the mission of NIEHS. Research and training areas include: • Exposure assessment tools such as sensors and computational tools and methods • Tools for evaluating environmental health and safety of engineered nanomaterials • Bio-monitoring technologies and biological response markers of exposure and response • Assays and model systems for screening compounds for toxicity • Intervention technologies to prevent or reduce exposures to environmental stressors • Educational materials to support understanding of environmental health science
Eligibility
- Applicant eligibility
SBIR grants can be awarded only to domestic small businesses (entities that are independently owned and operated for profit, are not dominant in the field in which research is proposed, and have no more than 500 employees). Primary employment (more than one-half time) of the principal investigator must be with the small business at the time of award and during the conduct of the proposed project. In both Phase I and Phase II, the research must be performed in the U.S. and its possessions. STTR grants can be awarded only to domestic small business concerns (entities that are independently owned and operated for profit, are not dominant in the field in which research is proposed and have no more than 500 employees) which "partner" with a research institution in cooperative research and development. At least 40 percent of the project is to be performed by the small business concern and at least 30 percent by the research institution. In both Phase I and Phase II, the research must be performed in the U.S. and its possessions.
How to apply
- Preapplication coordination
Preapplication Coordination is not applicable
- Criteria for selecting proposals
All accepted applications undergo scientific and technical evaluation through an initial review group and the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council. Applications are selected for funding in alignment with the NIH Unified Funding Strategies available on grants.nih.gov as well as alignment with NIEHS strategic priorities
- Award procedure
Applications selected for funding undergo programmatic and policy review prior to award as described in the NOFO.
- Appeals
A principal investigator (P.I.) and applicant institution may question the substantive or procedural aspects of the review of their application by communicating with the staff of the Institute.
