About this program

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) within the National Institutes of Health funds hypothesis-, design-, technology-, or device-driven research in biomedical imaging, bioengineering, biosensors, nanotechnology, bioinformatics, and related computational and imaging technologies (CFDA 93.EB1), with no specific award date or current solicitation identified in the source material.

The program supports a broad portfolio spanning biomaterials research including tissue engineering and implant science; biosensor and biotransducer development with emphasis on technology validation and algorithm creation; nanoscience applications including drug delivery systems and combinatorial technology; bioinformatics and computational modeling; imaging device development and contrast agent design; molecular and cellular imaging; and imaging technology assessment. Awards fund salaries, equipment, supplies, travel, and other investigative expenses aligned with program objectives.

Applications undergo two-stage review: an initial peer review panel convened by the NIH Center for Scientific Review generates written critiques and impact scores, followed by second-level review by the NIBIB National Advisory Council, which evaluates scientific merit, mission relevance, portfolio balance, and public health priorities. The NIBIB Institute Director holds final funding authority based on peer review results, Council recommendations, program priorities, and available appropriations. Just-in-Time requirements for human subjects, animal use, and regulatory assurances are verified post-selection. NIBIB Grants Management Officers then conduct administrative, financial, and policy compliance review before issuing the Notice of Award.

Grantees must retain financial, programmatic, and statistical records for three years from the date of annual FFR submission, with extended retention required if litigation, claims, audits, or financial management reviews commence during the retention period. HHS Inspector General and U.S. Comptroller General retain unrestricted access to recipient records pertinent to awards.

The source material does not provide recent grant award data, typical award magnitudes, current funding concentration among agencies, or recently posted grant opportunities. The program description reflects core NIBIB mission but offers no signals on current funding velocity or open solicitation status.

Objective and description

Objective

The Funding Goals of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) are to support the development and integration of advanced biomedical imaging, bioengineering, sensing and computational technologies for the improvement of

Description

To support hypothesis-, design-, technology-, or device-driven research related to the discovery, design, development, validation, and application of technologies for biomedical imaging and bioengineering. The program includes biomaterials (biomimetics, bioprocessing, organogenesis, rehabilitation, tissue engineering, implant science, material science, interface science, physics and stress engineering, technology assessment of materials/devices), biosensors/biotransducers (technology development, technology assessment, development of algorithms, telemetry), nanotechnology (nanoscience, biomimetics, drug delivery systems, drug bioavailability, microarray/combinatorial technology, genetic engineering, computer science, technology assessment), bioinformatics (computer science, information science, mathematics, biomechanics, computational modeling and simulation, remote diagnosis and therapy), imaging device development, biomedical imaging technology development, contrast agents, informatics and computer sciences related to imaging, molecular and cellular imaging, bioelectrics/biomagnetics, organ and whole body imaging, screening for diseases and disorders, and imaging technology assessment and surgery (technique development and technology development).

Eligibility

Uses of assistance

Research Grants provide funds for salaries, equipment, supplies, travel, and other expenses associated with scientific investigation relevant to program objectives. Grantee agrees to administer the grant in accordance with the regulations and policies governing the research grant programs of the Public Health Service as stated in the terms and conditions on the award for the grant.

How to apply

Criteria for selecting proposals

All accepted applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by an appropriate initial review group and by a national advisory council.

Award procedure

Applications are evaluated for scientific and technical merit by peer review panels convened by the NIH Center for Scientific Review, resulting in written critiques and an overall impact score. Applications then undergo second-level review by the NIBIB National Advisory Council, which advises on scientific merit, relevance to the NIBIB mission, portfolio balance, and public health priorities. Following Council review, final approval authority rests with the NIBIB Institute Director, who makes funding decisions based on peer review results, Council and Institute staff recommendations, program priorities, and the availability of appropriated funds. Once an application is selected for funding, NIBIB staff coordinate with the applicant to complete Just-in-Time requirements, including verification of human subjects, animal use, and other regulatory assurances as applicable. NIBIB Grants Management Officers then review the application for administrative, financial, and policy compliance and are responsible for issuing the Notice of Award (NoA)

Appeals

From 30 to 60 days. A principal investigator (P.I.) may question the substantive or procedural aspects of the review of his/her application by communicating with the staff of the Institute. A description of the NIH Peer Review Appeal procedures is available on the NIH website at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-11-064.html
