About this program
The National Institutes of Health supports basic, clinical, translational, and implementation research in substance use through the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs — Research Centers (CFDA 93.DA5), with award decisions rendered by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) following Scientific Review Group assessment and National Advisory Council concurrence.
The program funds research into prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of drug use, misuse, and addiction, drug overdose, and related health outcomes including HIV/AIDS. Funded research spans the full translational spectrum from basic science through implementation science, with merit determined by scientific and technical quality, research feasibility, potential contribution to the national drug use problem, and alignment with NIDA priorities.
Funding decisions follow a 240- to 270-day review cycle from application submission (180 days maximum for AIDS-related applications). NIDA awards grants directly to recipient institutions after Scientific Review Group recommendations receive National Advisory Council approval. Eligible applicant types and renewal determination are specified at the NOFO level; the source does not indicate current open solicitation or recent award activity. Applicants may appeal substantive or procedural aspects of peer review through NIH procedures.
Non-federal recipients are subject to audit requirements under 2 CFR Part 200 Subpart F and the NIH Grants Policy Statement. Financial records must be retained for at least three years, with extended retention when audit findings remain unresolved. The program requires compliance with NIH regulatory standards for grant administration and cost allocation.
The source does not provide grant award portfolio data, recent award examples, current funding levels, or information on recently posted funding opportunities.
