About this program

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), part of the National Institutes of Health, funds individual research training through CFDA 93.AR3, supporting investigators developing expertise in arthritis, musculoskeletal, and skin disease research with no specified application deadline currently open.

The program accepts investigator-initiated applications and responds to published funding opportunities (Requests for Applications and Program Announcements) targeting research into causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases. NIAMS funds research projects at domestic and international institutions. The source does not provide recent grant award data, award frequency, or dollar magnitudes for this training program.

Eligible applicants must have citizenship or lawful permanent resident status by the time of award; multiple Program Directors/Principal Investigators are not permitted on a single application. NIAMS conducts two-tier review: NIH Center for Scientific Review convenes peer review panels that assess scientific and technical merit and assign impact scores, followed by second-level review by the NIAMS National Advisory Council, which evaluates scientific quality, mission relevance, portfolio balance, and public health alignment. The NIAMS Institute Director makes final funding decisions based on peer review results, Council recommendations, program priorities, and available appropriations.

Recipients must retain financial, programmatic, statistical, and supporting records for three years from the date the annual Federal Financial Report is submitted to NIH, with extended retention if any litigation, claim, audit, or financial management review is initiated before the three-year period expires. The HHS Inspector General and U.S. Comptroller General retain unrestricted access rights to all recipient records pertinent to awards.

The source provides no information on current open grant opportunities, recent award activity, award volume, assistance-type distribution, or typical award sizes for this program.

Objective and description

Objective

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) mission is to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases; training of basic and clinical scientists

Description

The NIAMS funds research projects at institutions throughout the U.S. and around the world. We accept investigator-initiated applications, as well as accept applications for research grants and contracts in response to a published funding opportunity-Request for Applications (RFA) or Program Announcements (PA) to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases.

Eligibility

Applicant eligibility

Any candidate(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) is invited to work with their sponsor and organization to develop an application for support. Multiple PDs/PIs are not allowed. By the time of award, the individual must be a citizen or a non-citizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (i.e., possess a currently valid Permanent Resident Card USCIS Form I-551, or other legal verification of such status).

How to apply

Award procedure

Applications are evaluated for scientific and technical merit by peer review panels convened either by the NIH Center for Scientific Review, resulting in written critiques and an overall impact score. Applications then undergo second-level review by the NIAMS National Advisory Council, which advises on scientific quality, relevance to the NIAMS mission, portfolio balance, and public health priorities. Following Council review, final approval authority rests with the NIAMS Institute Director, who makes funding decisions based on peer review results, Council and Institute staff recommendations, program priorities, and the availability of appropriated funds. Once an application is selected for funding, NIAMS staff coordinate with the applicant to complete Just-in-Time requirements, including verification of human subjects, animal use, and other regulatory assurances as applicable. NIAMS Grants Management Officers then review the application for administrative, financial, and policy compliance and are responsible for issuing the Notice of Award (NoA).

Appeals

From 30 to 60 days. A principal investigator may question the substantive or procedural aspects of the review of his/her application by communicating with the staff of the Institute. A description of the NIH Peer Review Appeal procedures is available on the NIH home page at grants.nih.gov.
