About this program
The Department of Health and Human Services Indian Health Service administers the Health Professions Scholarship Program (CFDA 93.972) to provide scholarships to American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing degrees in medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, and other health professions deemed necessary by the Indian Health Service, with recipients obligated to serve in the Indian Health Service or tribal health programs upon completion. The most recent grant award on record dates to July 1, 2006—twenty years ago—signaling that this program is not currently active for new applications.
Award activity historically clustered in 2001–2003, with 7–8 awards per year before dropping to a single award in 2006. The portfolio contains 23 Project Grants totaling $4 million in combined federal dollars obligated, all administered by the Indian Health Service. Award magnitudes in the active years ranged from $37,110 to $500,000, with several awards in the $200,000–$250,000 range. The Indian Health Service remains the sole funding agency across all awards.
Eligibility is restricted to enrolled members of a Federally-recognized American Indian or Alaska Native tribe who are accepted by an accredited U.S. educational institution for full-time or part-time study and are eligible for appointment as a Commissioned Officer in the Public Health Service or civil service in the Indian Health Service. Funding covers tuition, fees, reasonable costs, and a monthly stipend, with tuition payments made directly to the recipient's institution. Selection emphasizes prior scholarship status, junior and senior level students in primary care fields, work experience in communities of health care need, personal background from underserved areas, career goals in primary care service to Indians, and academic performance. Financial need does not factor into award decisions.
The source provides no current grant opportunities or recent application activity.
