About this program
The National Institutes of Health National Eye Institute funds vision research through the Vision Research—Other Research program (CFDA 93.677), supporting eye and vision research projects that address the leading causes of blindness and impaired vision in the United States.
The program funds research into retinal diseases, corneal diseases, cataract, glaucoma and optic neuropathies, strabismus, amblyopia, and low vision and blindness rehabilitation. Funded activities also include epidemiological studies and health services research aimed at understanding normal visual system development and function to better prevent, diagnose, and treat sight-threatening conditions, as well as research to enhance rehabilitation, training, and quality of life for individuals who are partially sighted or blind.
The program operates through research grants and cooperative agreements, with eligible organizations and renewal terms determined at the NOFO level. All applications undergo scientific and technical merit review by scientific authorities and must be reviewed by the National Advisory Eye Council. Funding decisions rest on technical merit of the proposed project, availability of funds, and relevance to program priorities.
The source does not provide recent grant award data, including award counts, federal dollars obligated, typical award magnitudes, or recent recipient examples. The source does not identify currently open grant opportunities or posted application due dates. Records retention requirements mandate a minimum three-year retention period, with extended retention required if audit findings remain unresolved. Non-Federal recipients are subject to audit requirements under 2 CFR Part 200 Subpart F and the NIH Grants Policy Statement.
