About this program

The National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute administers the Vision Research - Training, Institutional program (CFDA 93.642) to fund organized vision research training and career development for trainees at eligible institutions, with emphasis on recruitment, mentoring, and scientific exchange in priority vision research areas.

The program supports institutional training infrastructure—not individual fellowships—to build capacity in vision research disciplines. Funded activities include structured training programs, career development initiatives, mentoring frameworks, and scientific workshops addressing vision research priorities. The National Eye Institute focuses training on research areas aligned with its core mission: understanding normal visual system development and function, preventing and treating vision diseases including retinal and corneal diseases, cataract, glaucoma, optic neuropathies, strabismus, amblyopia, and low vision rehabilitation, and improving outcomes for individuals who are blind or have impaired vision.

Selection criteria emphasize merit of the training program itself, likelihood of major impact on biomedical research workforce development, training in responsible conduct of research and methods for enhancing reproducibility, fund availability, and relevance to program priorities. All competitive applications undergo peer scientific review and evaluation by the National Advisory Eye Council before funding decisions are made on the basis of scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance.

Individual trainees are selected by the principal investigator (and institution) of an awarded grant rather than through direct application; trainee-level investigators should contact their institution about available training opportunities. Eligible applicant categories are described in the individual NOFO; this source does not specify which organization types may apply as primary grant recipients.

The program operates under 2 CFR 200 Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards. Recipients must retain records at least three years, or longer if audit findings remain unresolved. No recent grant awards, opportunity deadlines, or current award values are present in this source.

Description

The mission of the National Eye Institute is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research. The goal is to drive innovative research to understand the eye and visual system, prevent and treat vision diseases, and expand opportunities for people who are blind or require vision rehabilitation. Institutional Training, 1) support eye and vision research projects that address the leading causes of blindness and impaired vision in the U.S. These include, but are not limited to, retinal diseases; corneal diseases; cataract; glaucoma and optic neuropathies; strabismus; amblyopia; and low vision and blindness rehabilitation. 2) To increase understanding of the normal development and function of the visual system in order to better prevent, diagnose, and treat sight-threatening conditions; and, to enhance the rehabilitation, training, and quality of life of individuals who are partially-sighted or blind. 3) To encourage research training and career development in the sciences related to vision; to recruit a cohort of trainees who participate in organized approaches to vision research training, mentoring and career development; and to sponsor scientific workshops in high priority research areas to encourage exchange of information among scientists.

Eligibility

Applicant eligibility

Description of who is eligible to apply will be published in the NOFO. Trainee-level investigators should contact their institution about training opportunities. Appointees to these training programs are selected by the PD/PI of an awarded grant.

How to apply

Criteria for selecting proposals

The following consideration will be used in determining projects to be funded: (1) Merit of the training program (2) Likelihood of the program to have a major impact on biomedical research (3) Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research (4) Training in Methods for Enhancing Reproducibility (5) Availability of funds; and (6) Relevance to program priorities.

Award procedure

All applications are evaluated by scientific authorities for scientific and technical merit. Applications must also be reviewed by the National Advisory Eye Council. All competitive applications compete for available funds on the basis of scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance.

Time to approval or disapproval

2 CFR 200, Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards applies to this program.

Renewals

Renewals are determined at the level of the NOFO.

Appeals

A principal investigator may question the substantive or procedural aspects of the review of his/her application by communicating with the staff of the Institute. A description of the NIH Peer Review Appeal procedures is available on the NIH homepage http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-11-064.html
