About this program
The National Eye Institute, within the National Institutes of Health (Department of Health and Human Services), funds vision research through its SBIR/STTR program (CFDA 93.625), supporting small business innovation and technology transfer in eye and vision research with no specified application deadline currently posted.
The program funds research addressing leading causes of blindness and impaired vision in the United States, including retinal diseases, corneal diseases, cataract, glaucoma and optic neuropathies, strabismus, amblyopia, and low vision and blindness rehabilitation. Funded work also encompasses basic research to understand normal development and function of the visual system, and applied research to improve rehabilitation, training, and quality of life for individuals who are partially-sighted or blind. The SBIR track supports private sector commercialization of innovations derived from federal research, with emphasis on participation by socially and economically disadvantaged small business concerns and women-owned small business concerns. The STTR track funds cooperative research development carried out between small business concerns and research institutions, with the same diversity focus.
The program operates through competitive peer review. Applications receive initial assessment for scientific and technical merit, followed by programmatic relevance review by the National Advisory Eye Council, with final approval by the NEI Director. Funding decisions incorporate technical merit, availability of funds, and relevance to program priorities.
Eligible organizations and specific award amounts are determined at the NOFO level; the source does not specify typical award magnitudes, recent award history, or current open solicitation. Recipients must retain records for at least three years, or longer if audit findings remain unresolved. Standard NIH audit requirements under 2 CFR Part 200 Subpart F apply to non-federal institutions. Renewals are determined at the NOFO level.
