About this program

The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funds cooperative agreements under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Prevention Center for Healthy Weight (CFDA 93.522) to establish and operate collaborative networks for obesity prevention and treatment in children and families, with the most recent award disbursed on September 30, 2010.

This program supported a single cooperative agreement to plan, implement, and manage a Healthy Weight Collaborative (HWC) comprising approximately 50 community teams. The funded activities included providing technical assistance to community teams on evidence-based interventions to prevent and treat childhood obesity, supporting quality improvement approaches, and building capacity for long-term project sustainability beyond the federal funding period. The cooperative agreement holder was responsible for disseminating evidence-based community-based and clinical interventions across participating teams.

The program operated as a single-award cooperative agreement model, with HRSA as the sole funding agency. Combined federal dollars obligated totaled $5 million. The single documented award, a Cooperative Agreement to UC5OA21211, obligated $4.98 million and ran from September 30, 2010 through March 31, 2012.

No recent grant awards have been disbursed under this program since 2010. No current or recently posted grant opportunities are evident in the source material. The program's funding authority derives from Title V, Section 501(a)(2) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 701) and Section 4002 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148). Given the sixteen-year gap since the final recorded award and the absence of active solicitations, this program does not present a current funding opportunity.

Objective and description

Objective

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Office of Planning, Analysis and Evaluation (OPAE) announced the availability of funding for a cooperative agreement in Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 to support the Prevention Center for Healthy Weight (PC) to plan, implement and manage a Healthy Weight Collaborative (HWC) as well as recruit and support approximately 50 community teams participating in the HWC. The authority for this program is Title V, Section 501(a)(2) Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 701) and Section 4002 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148). Aligning with Administration and Departmental activities related to Healthy Weight and HRSA's strategic plan, the mission of the HWC is to discover, develop, and disseminate evidence-based community-based and promising clinical interventions to prevent and treat obesity for children and families. The cooperative agreement awardee will do the following: • Plan, implement, and manage the HWC; • Provide technical assistance to community teams to improve approaches to prevent and treat overweight and obesity in their respective communities; • Improve quality of care to prevent and treat overweight and obesity through understanding of quality improvement concepts, tools, and techniques; • Support teams participating in the HWC; and • Demonstrate a commitment to long-term sustainability of the project after the Federal period of support.
