About this program

The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration funds facility construction, renovation, and debt service for health care facilities affiliated with public academic medical centers under CFDA 93.502, with the most recent grant award disbursed in December 2010.

Program activity has been dormant for over fifteen years. The portfolio contains a single Project Grant awarded in 2010 for $99.9 million in federal support. No grant opportunities have been posted recently, and no awards have been obligated since the program's sole recorded disbursement closed out in 2014.

The program funds debt service, direct construction, or renovation of health care facilities that provide research, inpatient tertiary care, or outpatient clinical services. Eligible recipients are facilities affiliated with academic health centers at public research universities containing a state's sole public academic medical and dental school. Applicants must obtain gubernatorial certification that the facility is critical for expanded access to care in the state, essential for the viability of the medical and dental school and its academic health center, and that federal support covers up to 40 percent of total project cost, with the state providing the remaining funds through an established funding mechanism.

The sole recent award, a $99.9 million Project Grant (C11HS21507) to an unspecified recipient, funded infrastructure to expand access to care and carried an ultimate completion date of December 31, 2014.

Pursue this program only if you represent a public academic medical center meeting the statutory affiliation requirement and have identified a specific construction, renovation, or debt-service project with state backing and matching funds. The fifteen-year funding hiatus and absence of posted opportunities suggest the program is effectively inactive; contact HRSA directly to confirm current funding intent before allocating development resources.
