About this program

The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements (CFDA 93.00U) funds research projects that advance scientific understanding of dietary supplements, evaluate their safety and efficacy, and translate findings into public health applications.

The program supports a broad portfolio of dietary supplement research activities, including evaluation of safety, efficacy, quality, and biological effects; identification of research gaps and emerging public health concerns; multidisciplinary collaboration across NIH institutes and centers; and capacity-building in the dietary supplement research enterprise. ODS identifies cross-cutting research priorities and coordinates funding across NIH and with external federal and non-federal partners to strengthen the evidence base and inform clinical practice and public health decision-making.

The source does not disclose recent grant award activity, portfolio composition by assistance type, funding concentration among NIH institutes, typical award magnitudes, or recent grant opportunities. The program accepts applications from domestic nonprofit and for-profit organizations, institutions of higher learning, hospitals, laboratories, state and local government units, and tribal entities; some initiatives also accept foreign organizations. Grantees must retain financial and programmatic records for three years from the date of annual Federal Summary Reports submission. Applications undergo scientific review by a scientific review group and program relevance review by a national advisory council or board; administrative supplements are reviewed by NIH scientific staff.

Award amounts are limited by fund availability and vary by funding opportunity announcement. Recipients must comply with 45 CFR 75 retention, transfer, access, and recordkeeping requirements. Applicants may appeal substantive or procedural aspects of applications through the NIH scientific or research contact identified in each solicitation.

To assess current opportunity and award pace, consult NIH's funding opportunity portal for active ODS announcements and recent award data. The program's coordination across multiple NIH institutes suggests variable funding sources and priorities depending on the specific dietary supplement research initiative.
