About this program
The Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration funds university-based research consortia under the Defense Programs Academic Alliance (CFDA 81.304), supporting specialized scientific and technical talent development for the nuclear security enterprise across Nuclear, Materials, and High Energy Density Science; Predictive Science; and Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing Science.
The program awards Project Grants to institutions of higher education organized as multi-university consortia. Funded activities include salaries, materials and supplies, equipment, travel, publication costs, training, and services for research, training, and advanced technology projects aligned with NNSA Defense Programs technical mission areas. The focus is on workforce pipeline development with explicit preference for proposals demonstrating interaction with NNSA laboratory or production plant personnel and potential to contribute to long-term recruiting for the nuclear security enterprise. Selection prioritizes mission relevance and technical merit—alignment with specific research areas defined in each funding opportunity notice and original or important contributions to the defined technical scope—alongside consortia structure, including concept design, investigator roles, and institutional partnerships.
The source does not provide information on recent grant awards, award cadence, or the concentration of funding among NNSA components within the Defense Programs Academic Alliance. No grant opportunities are currently posted or recently solicited according to the source. The program's portfolio activity, typical award magnitudes, and recent recipient examples are not disclosed in this material.
Recipients must comply with 2 CFR 200 Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards and maintain auditable records substantiating total costs incurred. Awards are negotiated through NNSA Partnership Acquisition Services following approval by a Headquarters program official within the Program Office.
