About this program
The Department of Energy's Grid Deployment Office administers funding under CFDA 81.300 to catalyze development of new and upgraded electric infrastructure nationwide, including critical generation facilities (nuclear and hydropower), high-capacity transmission lines, and transmission and distribution technologies, through non-traditional funding mechanisms authorized by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
The program operates through several distinct mechanisms that fall outside traditional financial assistance and contract frameworks: capacity contracts and public-private partnerships under the Transmission Facilitation Program; credit payments via the Civil Nuclear Credits Program; and incentive payments under the Hydropower Incentives Program. GDO partners with states, Tribes, territories, industry, communities, and other energy sector stakeholders to support grid reliability, resilience, and cost reduction. Environmental review (Environmental Impact Statement or Environmental Assessment) may be required depending on project scope.
Funding is awarded through competitive processes, with approval timelines and spending restrictions varying by mechanism. The Secretary of Energy has delegated authority to the Under Secretary for Infrastructure, who has redelegated to the GDO Director. Award release terms, availability, and restrictions on spending differ by funding type and are detailed in the specific funding announcements and requests for proposals.
The source does not provide a grant award portfolio block with historical award counts, federal dollars obligated, assistance-type characterization, or award magnitudes. No recent grant awards or open opportunities with posted deadlines appear in the source. Interested parties should monitor GDO's website at https://www.energy.gov/gdo/grid-deployment-office or the federal infrastructure exchange at https://infrastructure-exchange.energy.gov/ for funding opportunities, requests for quotes, and guidance documents specific to each mechanism.

- Description
GDO acts as a partner with states, Tribes, territories, industry, communities, and other energy sector stakeholders to deploy solutions to lower energy costs and improve grid reliability and resilience. It strives to work in strong partnership with those across the U.S. to support a robust generation, transmission, and distribution system, which is the backbone of the Nation's economic, energy, and national security infrastructure. To facilitate these partnerships, GDO has several unique funding mechanisms and authorities through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Energy Policy Act of 2005. These include capacity contracts and public-private partnerships through the Transmission Facilitation Program; credit payments under the Civil Nuclear Credits Program; and incentive payments under the Hydropower Incentives Program. These funding mechanisms, generally referred to as "Identified Transactions," are not traditional financial assistance, nor do they meet the definition of a contract. Notwithstanding, all serve to stimulate the public purpose of a robust generation, transmission, and distribution system, which is the backbone of the Nation's economic, energy, and national security infrastructure.
