About this program
The Environmental Protection Agency is distributing Project Grants under CFDA 66.953 to build state and territorial capacity for implementing the EPA's voluntary K-12 Schools Environmental Health Program Guidelines, with the most recent grant awards issued on October 1, 2012.
This program has reached dormancy. Five Project Grants totaling $744 thousand in federal dollars were awarded in fiscal year 2012, all obligated between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2016. No grant awards have been disbursed since that cohort closed fourteen years ago. The most recent grant opportunity on file was posted March 6, 2012, with a due date of May 1, 2012, soliciting applications for Cooperative Agreements; however, no subsequent opportunities are documented in the available records.
The funded activities center on establishing statewide school environmental health programs that identify and mitigate environmental exposures in K-12 buildings, including lead-based paint, poor indoor air quality, volatile organic chemicals, asthma triggers, mold, pests and pesticides, and radon. Awarded projects created sustainable statewide programs by establishing advisory panels to steer implementation, convening multiagency consortia, and building capacity within state departments of public instruction and health. Representative recipients include the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Minnesota Department of Health, and Connecticut Department of Public Health, each awarded approximately $150 thousand.
The Environmental Protection Agency was the sole funding agency under this program. All five awards were Project Grants with no Cooperative Agreements, despite the most recent opportunity soliciting Cooperative Agreement applications.
This program does not appear to be actively soliciting applications under current funding cycles. Organizations interested in school environmental health at the state or territorial level should verify whether EPA has reactivated the program or whether related funding streams have superseded it.
