About this program

The Environmental Protection Agency funds groundwater research on enhanced aquifer use and recharge in support of sole source aquifers under CFDA 66.522, with competitive awards announced through Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) on a timeline not specified in available materials.

The program supports research conducted by States, units of local government, Indian Tribes, and research centers focused on groundwater management and aquifer recharge strategies. Award notifications typically arrive within approximately six months of the solicitation deadline. The source does not provide recent grant award data, open opportunities, or award-value ranges sufficient to characterize typical funding magnitudes, assistance-type distribution, or current activity volume. No competitive solicitation is currently open; applicants must monitor Grants.gov and EPA's research grants portal at https://www.epa.gov/research-grants for upcoming NOFO announcements. All initial applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov and will undergo peer review in accordance with EPA competitive policies. Selected applicants will be required to submit additional quality assurance documentation and certifications before award finalization. Environmental impact assessment is required. This program is eligible for Executive Order 12372 intergovernmental review; applicants subject to State single point of contact procedures should verify their jurisdiction's review requirements, while those not subject to such procedures must provide affected State and local entities at least 60 days to review the application after EPA notifies them of funding selection. Applicants should confirm whether their project falls under intergovernmental review scope and obtain any required State-level approvals. Dispute resolution for competition-related disagreements follows EPA procedures published in 70 FR 3629–3630 (January 26, 2005).
