About this program
The Department of Veterans Affairs administers the Casket or Urn Allowance Program (CFDA 64.205), which provides one-time monetary reimbursement for the purchase of a casket or urn when unclaimed Veterans are interred in VA national cemeteries or VA-grant-funded cemeteries.
The program reimburses individuals or entities that purchased burial containers for Veterans with no identifiable next of kin, or whose next of kin are unwilling or unable to assume responsibility for burial arrangements and lack sufficient resources to furnish a casket or urn. Applicants must certify that they have complied with applicable state or local law regarding disposition of unclaimed remains and that sufficient resources are not available for the burial container. Payment is issued as a one-time allowance to the purchaser once the application is approved via VA Form 40-10088.
Applicants denied reimbursement may submit supplemental claims with new and relevant evidence, request a higher-level review, or appeal to the Board of Veterans Appeals. The source does not indicate recent grant award activity, posted grant opportunities, specific award amounts, assistance type distribution, or funding volume for this program. The program functions as a direct benefit-payment mechanism for verified claims rather than a competitive or discretionary grant solicitation, reflecting its role in providing burial assistance for unclaimed Veterans. Interested applicants should contact the Department of Veterans Affairs for current claim-submission procedures and confirmation of reimbursement rates.
