About this program
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administers the Museums for America program (CFDA 45.030) to strengthen individual museums' capacity to serve the public by supporting high-priority, project-based activities aligned with institutional mission and strategic goals. The program structure includes three core project categories—Lifelong Learning, Community Anchors, and Collections Stewardship and Access—plus two special initiatives: Museums Empowered, which focuses on staff capacity-building through professional development in Digital Technology, Diversity and Inclusion, Evaluation, and Organizational Management; and Inspire! Grants for Small Museums, a dedicated track for institutions meeting IMLS's size criteria.
Funded activities span exhibitions, educational and interpretive programs, digital learning resources, professional development, community dialogue, audience research, and collections management, curation, care, and conservation. Museums Empowered projects specifically support training programs, fellowships, internships, mentoring, and recruitment and retention initiatives. All funded projects must address a key strategic-plan goal, reflect current best practice, and generate measurable outcomes directly tied to the identified need or challenge.
The source does not provide recent grant-award portfolio data, recent representative awards, or information on current grant opportunities, including application deadlines or funding volumes. The source references an August 2021 notification timeline for applicants, indicating the document reflects program guidance from that period. Current program activity, award frequency, typical grant magnitudes, and open solicitation status are not supported by this source. Prospective applicants should consult the IMLS website at www.imls.gov and the most recent Notice of Funding Opportunity for current opportunity status, deadline dates, eligibility criteria specific to the funding cycle, and recent award examples. IMLS staff review applications for eligibility and completeness before expert peer review, with final funding decisions made by the IMLS Director in alignment with agency mission.
Objective and description

To strengthen the ability of an individual museum to serve the public more effectively by supporting high-priority activities that advance its mission, plans, and strategic goals and objectives. Museums for America (MFA) has three project categories: Lifelong Learning, Community Anchors, and Collections Stewardship and Access. Museums Empowered, a special initiative of the MFA grant program, supports staff capacity-building projects that use professional development to generate systemic change within a museum. Museums Empowered has four project categories: Digital Technology, Diversity and Inclusion, Evaluation, and Organizational Management. Inspire! Grants for Small Museums is a special initiative of the MFA program designed to help small museums implement projects that address priorities identified in their strategic plans. Inspire! has three project categories: Lifelong Learning, Community Anchors, and Collections Stewardship and Access.
- Description
Museums for America supports museums of all sizes and disciplines in strategic, project-based efforts to serve the public through exhibitions, educational/interpretive programs, digital learning resources, professional development, community debate and dialogue, audience-focused studies, and/or collections management, curation, care, and conservation. Projects should focus on a key goal identified in the institution's strategic plan, reflect a thorough understanding of current practice and knowledge about the subject matter, and generate measurable results that tie directly to the need or challenge addressed. Museums Empowered projects may include training programs for museum staff; fellowships, internships, and mentoring programs; and/or the development of recruitment and retention programs as elements of professional development. Inspire! Grants for Small Museums offers MFA support to institutions considered small based on attributes identified in the Notice of Funding Opportunity.
