About this program

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awards grants under the Museum Grants for African American History and Culture program (CFDA 45.019) to build capacity at African American museums and support professional development, with the most recent application deadline noted as November 16, 2020.

The program funds projects that nurture museum professionals, build institutional capacity, and increase access to museum and archival collections at African American museums and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). IMLS welcomes applications from museums of all sizes and geographic areas whose primary mission centers on African American art, life, history, and culture. Successful applications must be structured to address a key institutional need or challenge through a logical, interrelated set of activities, with measurable results tied directly to that need.

The source does not provide a grant award portfolio block with funding concentration, assistance-type distribution, recent award cadence, or combined federal dollars obligated. No recent grant awards are documented in the source material. The source references a 2020 application deadline (November 16, 2020) but does not identify whether that opportunity remains open or has closed, nor does it provide information about current or upcoming funding opportunities. IMLS staff conduct peer review using experts in the field, with the IMLS Director making final funding decisions. The source indicates that IMLS notifies successful and unsuccessful applicants by email, provides reviewer comments and scores to unsuccessful applicants, and invites revision and resubmission.

Grant recipients must retain financial records, supporting documents, and all project records for three years following submission of the final financial report. IMLS may extend particular grants at the discretion of the Director. Current program information and guidance resources, including sample applications and outcome-based evaluation materials, are available through www.imls.gov and via Grants.gov.
