About this program
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funds National Leadership Grants (CFDA 45.018) supporting projects that address critical needs in the museum and library fields and advance professional practice, with no current open application deadline specified in available materials. The program prioritizes projects expected to generate widely replicable models, tools, research findings, services, practices, or alliances that strengthen museum and library services for the American public.
The program funds a range of activities including strategic collaborations, novel approaches to service delivery, research initiatives, and tool development within museum and library operations. Recent competitive activity included separate programs for National Leadership Grants for Libraries (which employs a two-phase preliminary and invited full-proposal structure) and National Leadership Grants for Museums, with past notification windows in July and August. The program previously included targeted initiatives such as Accelerating Promising Practices for Small Libraries (FY2019–FY2020) and the IMLS CARES Act Grants for Museums and Libraries (FY2020) to support pandemic response.
IMLS staff conduct eligibility and completeness reviews followed by peer evaluation by field experts. The agency applies outcome-based evaluation frameworks and makes final funding decisions through the Director, who weighs peer input against agency mission alignment. Successful proposals are expected to demonstrate far-reaching impact beyond the applicant institution, reflect thorough understanding of current practice and strategic field initiatives, employ novel approaches, incorporate collaborative partnerships, and position results for adaptation and scaling across the profession.
The source does not provide recent grant award data, portfolio concentration figures, typical award magnitudes, or a current open solicitation deadline. Applicants are required to maintain financial and project records for three years following submission of the final financial report. Unsuccessful applicants receive reviewer comments and scores and are invited to consult IMLS staff before resubmitting to this or another funding source.
