About this program
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is accepting discretionary Project Grants and Cooperative Agreements under Assistance Listing 20.622 for highway safety research, development, and demonstration projects, with application deadlines and eligibility criteria established on a project-by-project basis through Grants.gov.
Assistance Listing 20.622 was created in August 2025 as a successor to the previous ALN 20.614, which housed FY24 and FY25 financial obligations. The program will become the standard vehicle for NHTSA funding beginning in FY 2026. NHTSA's Office of Acquisition Management reviews project plans and budgets in cooperation with applicable program offices, applying defined evaluation factors and budget analysis to award decisions.
The program funds a broad range of highway safety activities. Representative project types include vehicle, highway, driver, passenger, motorcyclist, bicyclist, and pedestrian characteristic studies and demonstration projects; emergency medical services communications and injured-person transportation; human behavioral factors including driver education, impaired driving, and distracted driving interventions; evaluation of occupant protection and impaired-driving countermeasures; development of drug-impairment detection technologies; research and identification of best practices in driver education curricula, instructor training and certification, program administration and delivery mechanisms, and graduated licensing systems; and assessments of how state laws affect any of these activities.
Eligible applicants include state and local government agencies, for-profit and non-profit organizations, educational institutions, hospitals, and other persons as defined in Title 1 USC Chapter 1. Eligibility requirements and grantee selection criteria are established individually for each funding opportunity. Renewal and extension terms vary by project; some awards include option periods. Recipients must comply with 2 CFR Subpart F audit requirements, 2 CFR 200.33 record-retention standards, and applicable DOT regulations covering human-subjects protection, lobbying restrictions, nondiscrimination, and drug-free workplace requirements.
No recent grant awards or open grant opportunities are present in the source materials.
