About this program
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) within the Department of Transportation funds State Process for Informing Consumers of Recalls grants (CFDA 20.621) to support states in integrating vehicle safety recall notifications into motor vehicle registration processes, with award decisions typically rendered 2 to 4 months after application submission.
The program supports the development of technical methodologies that identify unremedied recalls using Vehicle Identification Numbers and notify vehicle owners and lessees of open safety recalls at the time of registration. Funded activities also include evaluation of notification system performance and impact on recall completion rates. Eligible applicants are states seeking to bridge the communication gap between manufacturers and vehicle owners by leveraging state registration systems to reduce unsafe vehicles on the road.
The source does not provide recent grant award data, portfolio statistics on award volume or assistance-type distribution, typical award magnitudes, concentration of funding among multiple agencies, or a list of representative recent award recipients.
