About this program

The Department of Labor Office of Workers Compensation Program administers lump-sum monetary payments and medical benefits to covered Department of Energy employees, predecessor-agency workers, certain vendors and contractors, and uranium miners, millers, and ore transporters under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation program (CFDA 17.310), which provides compensation for occupational injuries and illnesses related to nuclear weapons testing or production.

This is not a discretionary grant program. The source contains no grant award portfolio data, no recent grant awards, no grant opportunities with application deadlines, and no funding history. The program operates as a statutory benefits administration: the Department of Labor processes claims from eligible workers and their survivors, issues recommended decisions through OWCP district offices, and issues final decisions through the Final Adjudication Branch. Claimants may request review or hearing within 60 days of a recommended decision or request reconsideration within 30 days of a final decision; the entire claims process from receipt to final decision typically exceeds 180 days.

Eligibility is restricted to employees and survivors of employees of the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies, certain DOE vendors, contractors, and subcontractors, and uranium miners, millers, and ore transporters covered under Section 5 of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act who engaged in covered employment related to nuclear weapons testing or production. Maximum lump-sum payment under Part B is $150,000 per covered employee; under Part E the maximum is $250,000 per covered employee. Medical expenses carry no cap. Applicants should contact the Resource Center or appropriate regional location for claims procedures and deadlines. This program does not accept competitive grant applications and is unsuitable for organizations pursuing federal discretionary grant funding.
