About this program

The Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics operates Assistance Listing 17.003 to provide, analyze, and publish statistical data on consumer, producer, export, and import prices and consumer expenditures; no recent grant awards or open grant opportunities are supported by the source.

The program funds the development and ongoing collection of five principal statistical products: Consumer Price Indexes measuring price changes for goods and services consumed by urban households and wage earners; Producer Price Indexes tracking average selling price changes for domestic producer output; Export and Import Price Indexes measuring international trade price movements and their effect on U.S. economic competitiveness; and Consumer Expenditure Surveys supplying periodic updates to market baskets, index weights, and spending and income data segmented by income, age, race, family size, and region. The Consumer Price Index serves as the basis for most purchasing-power estimates and has widespread use in escalation adjustments across private and public sectors. Producer Price Indexes are widely cited in long-term sales contract escalation clauses.

The source provides no information about recent grant awards, award cadence, or the distribution of assistance types within the portfolio. No grant opportunities currently open or posted recently are documented in the source. The program description indicates that requests for information and assistance may be directed to regional offices of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and that the general public may request information; no credentialing or documentation is required for access to these statistical products.

Without documented recent grant opportunities or award activity in the source, this program does not appear to function as an active grant-funding vehicle for external recipients in the traditional sense. Organizations seeking to engage with this Assistance Listing should contact the nearest BLS regional office to clarify the current mechanism for funding support or data-use partnerships.

Uses of assistance

Provides for Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) which measure the average change in prices of goods and services consumed by all urban households as well as urban wage earners and clerical workers. As the basis for most estimates of changes in the purchasing power of the consumer's dollar, the CPI has widespread use in escalation adjustments in both the private and public sectors. Provides for Producer Price Indexes (PPI) which measure the average change in selling prices that domestic producers of goods, services, and construction receive for their output and which are widely cited within price escalation clauses of long term sales contracts to protect both parties against inflation. Provides for Export and Import Price Indexes (MXPI) which measure the average change in import and export prices, which are used to adjust international trade data and to measure the effect these price changes have on the competitiveness of the U.S. economy. Provides for Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CE), which supply periodic updates to the market basket and the weights used to calculate the CPI. In addition, the CE supplies information on consumers' spending and income by characteristics such as income, age, race, family size, and region.
