About this program

The Federal Bureau of Investigation operates the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), CFDA 16.304, a computerized criminal justice information system providing authorized local, state, and federal agencies access to indexed records of nationwide criminal justice interest at no direct cost to participating state agencies.

NCIC functions as a high-speed criminal justice communications network, maintaining a searchable index of records concerning wanted persons, missing persons, unidentified persons, persons on supervised release, persons subject to protection orders, registered sexual offenders, persons violating immigration laws, persons associated with violent gangs or terrorist organizations, stolen property, and criminal history records. The system locates and transmits essential data in seconds to support criminal justice operations. NCIC is hosted at the FBI's Criminal Justice Services Division in Clarksburg, West Virginia, and serves authorized agencies throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa.

Participation is open to local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies meeting authorization criteria; prospective participants access the system through their individual control terminal agency or by contacting the Director at FBI headquarters. The FBI provides technical consulting services and training to state agencies operating systems connected to the NCIC computer at no expense.

The source provided does not include a grant award portfolio, recent grant awards, or current grant opportunities. This program structure suggests NCIC operates as a centralized service platform rather than as a traditional competitive grant-funding vehicle. Agencies seeking access should direct inquiries to their state control terminal agency or to the FBI's Criminal Justice Services Division.
