About this program
The Federal Bureau of Investigation provides forensic examination services, expert testimony support, and specialized training to state and local law enforcement agencies under the Law Enforcement Assistance FBI Crime Laboratory Support program (CFDA 16.301), with no current open grant opportunity posted.
This program operates as a service-delivery mechanism rather than a traditional grants portfolio. The FBI Laboratory accepts formal written requests from duly constituted state and local law enforcement agencies in the United States and its possessions to examine submitted evidence in connection with criminal or terrorism investigations. The Laboratory furnishes forensic examination results and expert witnesses for testimony related to those examinations, with the explicit understanding that reports are used only for official investigation and prosecution purposes. The FBI Laboratory declines cases when the requesting agency or another crime laboratory possesses the capability to conduct the requested examinations.
Beyond case-specific forensic work, the program delivers specialized forensic training across multiple forensic disciplines to eligible state and local law enforcement applicants, distributed commensurate with available resources. The program also transfers enhanced forensic equipment and tools to state and local forensic and law enforcement personnel where resources permit.
The source does not report grant award portfolio data, recent award examples, award dates, or funding magnitudes. It provides no information about award cadence, typical award sizes, or whether grant opportunities have been posted recently. The program description indicates this is a direct-service program where law enforcement agencies submit formal requests for forensic analysis and training rather than a competitive grant-application process with posted solicitations and funding cycles.
Applicants should direct inquiries to the FBI Laboratory, Office of the Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Washington, DC 20535. Eligibility is limited to duly constituted state and local law enforcement agencies. The source does not specify application procedures, deadlines, or typical response timelines for forensic service requests.

Submitted evidence is examined and the FBI Laboratory also furnishes the experts necessary to testify in connection with the results of these examinations. These examinations are made with the understanding that the evidence is connected with an official investigation of a criminal or terrorism matter and that the laboratory report will be used only for official purposes related to the investigation or a subsequent prosecution. The FBI Laboratory will not accept cases from other crime laboratories which have the capability of conducting the requested examinations. Additionally, specialized forensic training in many forensic disciplines is conducted. This training is provided to eligible applicants commensurate with available resources. Finally, through available resources, the FBI Laboratory provides new enhanced equipment and tools to State and forensic and law enforcement personnel.
