About this program

The Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs funds implementation of new and enhanced family-based pre-arrest and pre-sentencing alternative justice programs through CFDA 16.067; current funding opportunities are available at https://www.ojp.gov/funding/explore/current-funding-opportunities.

This program supports rehabilitation, family unification, and family preservation for parents and primary caregivers involved in or at risk for criminal justice system involvement. Funded activities help parents avoid incarceration when appropriate, strengthen parenting capacity, prevent children from entering foster care, and reduce recidivism for both parents and children. The program operates through discretionary grants with award periods generally ranging from 12 to 36 months, though specific durations are set in the current fiscal year NOFO. Award extension is possible upon approval by the Assistant Attorney General when specific criteria are met.

The source does not provide recent grant award data, assistance-type characterization, funding concentration among sub-agencies, award economics, representative recent awards, or information on currently posted opportunities. To evaluate activity recency, typical award magnitudes, and current solicitation status, consult the Office of Justice Programs current funding opportunities page and the most recent program NOFO. Applicants selected for funding are notified through DOJ's Justice Grants System and must accept awards electronically. Recipients must retain all financial records, supporting documents, and statistical records for three years from the final expenditure report submission date per 2 C.F.R. 200.334 as adopted in 2 C.F.R. Part 2800. Denial of discretionary applications carries no appeal rights.
