About this program

The Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance funds the expansion of statewide drug data repositories into regional drug data research centers to combat the overdose crisis (CFDA 16.046), with the most recent grant award issued October 1, 2023.

The program supports accredited institutions of higher learning in building centralized data repositories and dissemination centers that collect, analyze, and share drug use, drug trafficking, and overdose-related data across state lines. Recent awards have funded the construction of web-based platforms, interactive data dashboards, downloadable datasets and visualizations, stakeholder engagement through community-engaged research approaches, and technical documentation to enable other regions to replicate the model. Award activities span multi-state regional partnerships; the Ohio River Valley Corridor center serves ten states from Delaware to West Virginia, while the Southeast Regional center covers SAMHSA Region 4 states and has expanded public data access to nine additional states.

All funding under this program has flowed through a single federal agency—the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance—which has made two Cooperative Agreements totaling $7.1 million obligated federal dollars. The program issued one award in 2022 and one in 2023, with award periods extending up to 36 months and subject to potential no-cost extensions. The University of Alabama's Institute of Data and Analytics received $3.536 million (award date October 1, 2022; ultimate completion date September 30, 2026) to establish the Southeast Regional Drug Data Research Center; the Ohio River Valley Corridor center received $3.550 million (award date October 1, 2023; ultimate completion date September 30, 2026).

The program has no active grant opportunities currently posted. The most recent solicitation (BJA FY 23 Drug Data Research Center to Combat the Overdose Crisis, solicitation number O-BJA-2023-171649) closed May 1, 2023 and anticipated awarding up to two Cooperative Agreements to accredited institutions of higher learning.
