About this program
The Drug Enforcement Administration does not operate this as a grant program; no federal funding is available under CFDA 16.001. Instead, the program provides technical assistance in the form of free forensic laboratory analysis and training to state, county, and municipal law enforcement agencies.
DEA laboratories conduct specialized forensic chemical examinations of drug evidence for eligible state and local law enforcement agencies on an as-needed basis, provided the requesting agency lacks the capability to perform the examination internally. Services include chemical analysis, laboratory reports, and follow-up court testimony at no cost. DEA also offers training to forensic chemists at state, county, and municipal laboratories where appropriate. Examinations proceed only when evidence is connected to an official criminal investigation within DEA's mission scope and the resulting report will be used for official investigation or prosecution purposes.
Eligible applicants are any duly constituted state, county, or municipal law enforcement agency in the United States or its possessions. Requests are submitted via formal written letter to the regional DEA Laboratory director or to DEA Headquarters, Washington, DC 20537, Attention: Deputy Assistant Administrator, Office of Forensic Sciences.
The portfolio history reflects a single Block Grant award of $1.9 million obligated in October 2013, with project completion in September 2016. No grant awards have been disbursed since 2013, and the official program description explicitly states this is not a grant program and no funding is available. The assistance provided—laboratory analysis, reporting, and training—comes from DEA's operational budget and is not subject to competitive grant solicitation.
This program is not a viable funding pursuit. Organizations seeking federal grant support should evaluate other Assistance Listings. Entities with forensic laboratory needs should contact the appropriate regional DEA Laboratory or DEA Headquarters to request analysis and training services directly under this technical-assistance framework.
