About this program

The National Park Service administers the Good Neighbor Authority Recreation program (CFDA 15.988) to fund recreation enhancement and improvement projects on federal lands and adjacent tribal or local lands, with award decisions and opportunity posting timing variable by project scope.

The program funds concrete recreation infrastructure work: trail building and repair, campground upgrades, restroom improvements, and picnic area expansions. Projects operate through cooperative agreements or contracts with state governors, Indian tribes, or counties to deliver these services on National Park Service lands or nearby state, local, or tribal lands to create integrated recreation areas. The statute (16 USC 8571) defines eligible partners as state or commonwealth governors, Indian tribes, and counties.

Awards are made through a competitive, merit-based review process on grants.gov based on evaluation criteria stated in each funding announcement. Award amounts and project timelines vary; the program description indicates project periods generally range from 30 to 90 days, though most projects operate on a year-to-year basis with funds expended in the current fiscal year. Payment frequency to recipients is determined at the time of individual award.

The source provides no recent grant award portfolio data, no award history trend, no typical award magnitude, and no currently open grant opportunities. It states that "further information will be available for each specific project at the time the funding opportunity announcement is posted on www.grants.gov." The program description contains no information on historical award volume, funding concentration among federal agencies, or recent solicitation activity.
