About this program
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a bureau of the Department of the Interior, administers Minerals Resources External Research (CFDA 15.816), which funds research into nonfuel mineral resources including fundamental Earth processes forming mineral deposits, environmental behavior of mineral resources and waste products, mineral resource inventories and assessments, effects of mineral development on natural resources, and availability and reliability of mineral supply chains. The program's most recent grant award was disbursed on July 1, 2014—over twelve years ago—signaling that this program is dormant or inactive and warrants close evaluation before pursuing.
Activity has ceased entirely since 2014. The portfolio shows 12 total awards spanning 2011 through 2014, with peak activity in 2012 (six awards). No grant opportunities have been posted recently, and no awards have been obligated in more than a decade. The program remains listed as an active Assistance Listing, but the absence of awards or solicitations since mid-2014 indicates either that funding has been redirected, the program has been suspended, or application windows are no longer being opened.
All 12 awards are Project Grants, with combined federal dollars obligated totaling $608 thousand. The USGS is the sole funding agency. Representative recent awards include research on copper isotopic systematics in nickel-copper-precious-metal sulfide mineralization in the Midcontinent Rift system ($62,548 in May 2014); investigation of rare rare-earth-element mineral occurrence near Jamestown, Colorado ($42,771 in May 2014); and systematic investigation of rare earth element mobility and fractionation during continental shale weathering ($49,908 in February 2012). Award magnitudes typically fall in the $40,000 to $67,000 range. No recent grant opportunities are available for pursuit under this program.
Given the twelve-year gap since the last award and absence of any posted solicitations, organizations should verify directly with the USGS whether this program remains open to applications before investing in proposal development.
