About this program

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Department of the Interior funds conservation projects targeting African rhino population growth, management improvements, and habitat protection under Assistance Listing 15.690, with the most recent grant activity occurring in fiscal year 2025.

This program was created in fiscal year 2025 and consolidated prior awards previously reported under Assistance Listing 15.619. The program funds implementation of rhinoceros conservation programs in nations whose activities affect rhino populations, compliance with CITES and domestic wildlife protection laws, and development of scientific data on rhino habitat condition, population trends, reproduction, and mortality. Eligible recipients include federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofit institutions, and private organizations with demonstrated experience in rhinoceros conservation.

Grant awards are structured as competitive Project Grants decided through notice of funding opportunity review criteria. Recipients may request funding for subsequent years of currently funded projects, but renewal requests undergo full competitive review and are obligated as new awards rather than amendments. The program requires recipients to maintain records per 2 CFR 200 and obligates funds to successful applicants through a formal notice of award; recipients then request reimbursement in accordance with federal cost principles unless program-specific terms specify otherwise. Recipients expending one million dollars or more in federal awards annually must undergo a single or program-specific audit.

The source does not provide recent grant award examples, portfolio composition data on the distribution of assistance types, concentration of funding by sub-agency, typical award magnitudes, or total federal dollars obligated. No currently open grant opportunities are listed in the source. To evaluate specific award history, recent recipient activity, typical funding levels, and current solicitation status, consult the Grants.gov opportunity listing and the Fish and Wildlife Service's grants portal for the most current information on this newly established program.
